Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) leader Syed Mustafa Kamal has made a pressing appeal to the Prime Minister to develop a comprehensive national electricity policy to address the country’s ongoing energy crisis. The current electricity tariffs and capacity payments have become a significant burden on the public, and Kamal emphasizes the need for immediate relief.
Kamal’s appeal comes at a time when the country is grappling with high electricity costs, which have disproportionately affected the citizens of Sindh, particularly Karachi. Despite contributing 51% to the national economy, Karachi continues to face significant challenges, including discriminatory treatment by the Sindh government.
The MQM-P leader stresses that any policy aimed at providing relief in electricity bills must include Sindh and address the unique challenges faced by the province. He criticizes the Sindh government for its “discriminatory” treatment of Karachi and Hyderabad, emphasizing the need for fair and equitable treatment across all regions.
Kamal also urges the government to take concrete steps to stimulate investment and provide relief from rising electricity costs. He suggests offering affordable land to investors and focusing on internal management improvements to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
Furthermore, Kamal raises concerns about the misuse of fake domiciles to take away 40% of jobs allocated under the urban quota in Sindh, further disadvantaging citizens in the province. He emphasizes the need for swift action to address this issue and ensure that citizens receive their due share of employment opportunities.
Despite criticizing current policies, Kamal expresses optimism that the federal government will eventually provide relief to the public on electricity bills. He reiterates the need for a comprehensive national electricity policy that addresses the unique challenges faced by each province and provides fair and equitable treatment to all citizens.
