In a dramatic turn of events, 10 members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) were arrested and brought to the Parliament House during an ongoing National Assembly session. The lawmakers, including prominent figures such as Sheikh Waqas Akram and Zain Qureshi, were escorted by a heavy police contingent and handed over to Acting Sergeant-at-Arms Farhat Abbas upon arrival.
The arrested MNAs met with Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who had issued their production orders a day earlier, and protested that their arrest within the parliament was against the law. The speaker assured them that a committee had been formed to investigate the matter, but the members remained unsatisfied with his explanations.
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, Omar Ayub, and Ali Muhammad Khan, among others. The members questioned the speaker, asking why they were arrested like terrorists and expressing frustration at the security officers involved in their arrest.
Meanwhile, the Islamabad High Court sent the arrested MNAs to jail on judicial remand, suspending the physical remand decision. Chief Justice Aamir Farooq questioned the prosecutor general on the grounds for the physical remand and scheduled a hearing for the case by a two-member special bench.
The incident has sparked widespread debate and criticism, with many questioning the legality of the arrests and the treatment of the lawmakers.
