Hamas provided gift bags to three Israeli female hostages upon their release, a gesture that has ignited controversy in Hebrew media. The gift bags, presented to the hostages during a video release, included items that Israeli outlets have called a “religious game” and a potential propaganda tool.
In the video, 28-year-old Emily Damari, 24-year-old Romi Gonen, and 31-year-old Doron Stein Brecher are seen smiling as Hamas militants from the Al-Qassam Brigades handed them gift bags marked with the group’s logo. The three women appeared happy and unafraid, suggesting that they had been treated well during their captivity. They cheerfully accepted the bags, which contained a certificate of release signed with the words “Release Decision.”
According to Israeli news outlet Ynet, the bags also contained photos of the hostages taken during their captivity and a map of the Gaza Strip.
Hebrew media outlets quickly labeled the gesture as a “religious game” and a possible propaganda tactic. However, the precise purpose of the gift bags has not yet been fully clarified.
The release of the three Israeli women and 90 Palestinian prisoners was part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas on Sunday. Under the terms of the deal, 33 more Israeli hostages are set to be freed over the next six weeks, in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
