Seoul: Supporters of South Korea’s ousted President Yoon Suk-yeol stormed a court building after his detention was extended by 20 days amid ongoing investigations into his attempt to impose martial law.

According to international media, the court’s decision to prolong Yoon’s custody triggered violent protests from his followers. The angry mob broke doors and windows of the courthouse and caused damage to furniture inside.

Authorities reported that 40 individuals were arrested in connection with the attack, while 40 others sustained minor injuries and received medical attention.

Yoon Suk-yeol was detained four days ago for allegedly attempting to impose martial law for a brief period on December 3. His supporters had previously obstructed his arrest and continued to demonstrate against his detention.

The constitutional court is currently reviewing the impeachment motion against Yoon, who was removed from office following the controversial declaration of martial law.

The unrest highlights deep political divisions in South Korea as the nation grapples with the fallout from the former president’s unprecedented actions.
