Leh/Kargil, Ladakh ( The COW News Digital) The Indian-administered region of Ladakh has been placed under strict curfew following violent protests led by Gen Z demonstrators demanding constitutional safeguards, employment opportunities, and restoration of democratic rights. Authorities have deployed additional police and paramilitary forces to restore order after widespread arson and clashes left at least four dead and dozens injured.
The protests began on Wednesday when hundreds of young demonstrators took to the streets, rallying for special status and job security. Tensions escalated when security forces attempted to disperse the crowd, triggering violent confrontations. Protesters set ablaze police and paramilitary vehicles, torched the local office of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and damaged several government buildings.
By Thursday morning, Leh and Kargil were under heavy security lockdown. Paramilitary patrols were increased, and curfew orders were announced to prevent further escalation. Shops and businesses remained shuttered as part of a voluntary shutdown observed across Kargil after local organizations called for a strike.
Kavinder Gupta, Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, condemned the violence, calling the loss of life “tragic and deeply disturbing.” He justified the imposition of curfew as a necessary measure to prevent further bloodshed and property damage.
Local political activist Sajjad Kargili urged the government to engage with protesters through dialogue rather than force. “The youth are angry because they feel deprived of their rights. The administration should restart negotiations immediately and address their concerns seriously,” he said.
The protests reflect growing discontent in Ladakh, where many residents have been demanding constitutional protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to safeguard land, jobs, and cultural identity since the region was carved out as a separate Union Territory in 2019.
Officials confirmed that at least 40 protesters were detained during Wednesday night’s crackdown. Authorities have appealed to residents to remain calm and stay indoors while security forces continue to monitor the situation.
Human rights groups have expressed concern about the use of force against civilians, warning that the crackdown could further alienate Ladakh’s youth and intensify demands for greater autonomy. With tensions running high, all eyes are now on New Delhi’s next move as Ladakh remains on edge.
