US Urges Pakistan to Respect Human Rights After UN Report on Imran Khan’s Detention

Washington: The US State Department has called on Pakistan to respect the fundamental human rights of its citizens, following a UN report that deemed Imran Khan\’s detention \”arbitrary\” and \”politically motivated\”.

Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, including freedom of expression, association, peaceful assembly, and religion. He reiterated that the US has consistently urged Pakistan to uphold its international commitments and constitutional obligations.

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had declared Khan\’s detention a violation of international law, calling for his immediate release and compensation. The group also highlighted the broader campaign of repression against Khan and his party, including arrests, torture, and election fraud.

While the US acknowledged the UN report, it maintained that Khan\’s detention is an internal matter for Pakistan. However, the State Department expressed ongoing concern about the credibility of Pakistani elections and allegations of massive rigging.
