The United States government has categorically denied any involvement in the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre dismissed the allegations as “simply false” and emphasized that the US had “no involvement at all” in the events that led to Hasina’s resignation.
The denial comes after a report cited Hasina as accusing the US of playing a role in her ouster, allegedly due to its interest in controlling Bangladesh’s Saint Martin Island in the Bay of Bengal. However, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, later clarified that his mother never made such a statement.
The US has maintained that it supports the democratic process in Bangladesh and believes that the future of the Bangladeshi government should be determined by the Bangladeshi people. The country has been embroiled in political turmoil, with deadly protests and violence erupting after student protests against job quotas escalated into a campaign to oust Hasina.
Hasina’s resignation led to the formation of an interim government, headed by Nobel Peace laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus, with the aim of holding elections in the country. The US has emphasized its commitment to a peaceful and democratic transition in Bangladesh.
