The situation for children in Sudan is becoming increasingly dire, with the ongoing civil war and climate crisis converging to create a potentially catastrophic scenario. According to UNICEF spokesman James Elder, tens of thousands of child deaths are likely in the coming months if urgent action is not taken.
Sudan is experiencing the largest child displacement in the world, with 10,000 girls and boys displaced every day. The displaced children often end up in camps that lack basic necessities like clean drinking water, medical supplies, and adequate sanitation. Severe food shortages, exacerbated by warring parties blocking access to aid, are also affecting children across the country.
Climate change is further exacerbating the crisis, with children in Sudan experiencing twice as many heat waves as their grandparents did 50-60 years ago. This level of consistent heat is unbearable for children, who lack the resilience to endure it.
Elder criticized both the warring parties in Sudan and the international community for their “dangerous example of global indifference” towards children’s suffering. Despite the dire circumstances, he noted an “extraordinary spirit of unity” among the Sudanese people, with communities supporting each other in the face of adversity.
