The United Nations’ cultural agency, UNESCO, has expressed alarm over the Taliban’s ban on girls’ education in Afghanistan, which has denied 1.4 million girls access to secondary education since 2021. This represents 80% of Afghan school-age girls, with the number increasing by 300,000 since April 2023.
The ban has also led to a sharp decline in primary education, with 1.1 million fewer girls and boys attending school. UNESCO warns that this massive drop-out rate could lead to a rise in child labor and early marriage.
The Taliban’s restrictions on women have been described as “gender apartheid” by the UN, with Afghanistan being the only country in the world to stop girls and women from attending secondary schools and universities.
UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has urged the international community to remain mobilized to obtain the unconditional reopening of schools and universities to Afghan girls and women.
