The UK Government has announced plans to address the growing concern of headlight glare on roads, following a surge in complaints from drivers. MP Lilian Greenwood confirmed in Parliament that research will be commissioned to investigate the causes of excessive headlight brightness and propose solutions.
The issue has been highlighted by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), which found that 89% of drivers believe some vehicle headlights are too bright, and 91% experience discomfort from oncoming lights. Despite advancements in headlamp technology, the problem persists, contributing to approximately 280 road accidents annually.
Factors contributing to the issue include the increased brightness of LED headlights, higher headlight positioning on SUVs, and illegal aftermarket LEDs. The RAC’s road safety spokesperson, Rod Dennis, welcomed the government’s decision, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination to address this significant and growing road safety concern.
