London ( The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held a telephone conversation on Tuesday to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful resolution and long-term global stability.

According to the British government, the two leaders exchanged views on the current situation and expressed strong support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. Both leaders praised Washington’s role in facilitating dialogue and pushing for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

During the discussion, Starmer and Carney emphasized their shared stance on supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. They stressed that any future for Ukraine must be built on the principles of freedom, self-determination, and the protection of human rights.

The leaders also agreed that peace cannot be imposed from outside but must be established with Ukraine’s full consent and active participation. “Peace should reflect the will of the Ukrainian people,” Starmer was quoted as saying, adding that any resolution must ensure lasting security in the region.

Both prime ministers highlighted the urgent need to prevent further loss of life and reduce the humanitarian toll of the war. They reiterated their commitment to maintaining humanitarian aid to Ukraine, ensuring civilians receive food, shelter, and medical care in war-affected areas.

Looking ahead, Starmer and Carney pledged to enhance diplomatic cooperation, coordinate closely in multilateral forums, and continue to apply political pressure on parties unwilling to engage in constructive peace talks. They also discussed strengthening sanctions against actors who undermine peace efforts and prolong the conflict.

The conversation comes at a time when international pressure is mounting for a ceasefire, amid fears that continued fighting will escalate regional instability and hamper global economic recovery. Both leaders reaffirmed their determination to work with allies to uphold the rules-based international order and support Ukraine in its reconstruction once peace is achieved.

Observers note that the joint statement reflects a unified approach among Western allies, signaling that the UK and Canada will remain actively involved in shaping post-war security arrangements for Ukraine.

The British government confirmed that further high-level meetings between UK, Canadian, and U.S. officials are planned in the coming weeks to review progress on ceasefire negotiations and coordinate next steps.
