Twin Cities Flood Alert: WASA & Rescue 1122 Ready

RAWALPINDI/ISLAMABAD:( The COW News Digital) – Continuous heavy rainfall since early morning in twin cities, Rawalpindi and Islamabad, has prompted authorities to impose a rain emergency. WASA Rawalpindi and Rescue 1122 remain on high alert following warnings from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which has forecast more rain in the coming days.

According to WASA rawalpindi Managing Director Muhammad Saleem Ashraf, staff and heavy machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas to address potential urban flooding  Continuous monitoring is being carried out, particularly at Nullah Lai and city drains. Current water levels at Nullah Lai stand at six feet in Katarian and five feet at the Gowalmandi Bridge.

A total of over 70 mm of rainfall has been recorded in various parts of the twin cities. The PMD reported 69 mm in Saidpur, 71 mm in Golra, 29 mm in Bokra, 37 mm at the PMD office, 34 mm in Shamsabad, 22 mm in Kachhari, 27 mm in Pir Wadhai, 30 mm in Golmandi, and 31 mm in Katarian.

On the directions of Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin, all relevant agencies are mobilised, and WASA has implemented emergency protocols to protect lives and property. He confirmed that all available resources are being utilized to manage the situation.

Rescue 1122 Rawalpindi has also stationed personnel around Nullah Lai and in other flood-prone areas such as Katarian and Gowalmandi. Rescue teams have remained on duty throughout the rainfall period.

Authorities have issued safety guidelines for the public. Citizens are advised to remain indoors unless necessary, avoid areas near rivers and electricity poles, and drive at reduced speeds. Parents are urged to keep children away from water channels and weak structures. In case of emergencies, citizens are instructed to contact Rescue 1122.

The situation remains under close watch as rain is expected to continue over the next two days.
