Pakistan’s Federal Debt Hits Record High of PKR 70.37 Trillion

Islamabad: The federal government’s total debt has reached an unprecedented high of PKR 70.37 trillion, breaking all previous records.

According to details, from July to November 2024, the federal debt increased by PKR 1.452 trillion, bringing the total debt to PKR 70.366 trillion.

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported that by June 2024, the total federal debt stood at PKR 68.914 trillion.

The government’s domestic debt saw a 3% rise, amounting to an increase of PKR 1.425 trillion, bringing the total domestic debt to PKR 48.585 trillion.

During the first five months of the current fiscal year, Pakistan’s external debt also rose by PKR 25 billion, reaching PKR 21.78 trillion, compared to PKR 21.754 trillion in June 2024.

The SBP has indicated that between January and March 2025, the federal government is expected to borrow an additional PKR 1.5 trillion.
