A devastating terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber district’s Charwazagai area has left two policemen and one civilian martyred, and one policeman and one civilian injured. The attack, which occurred at the Pak-Afghan highway near Landi Kotal Bazar, is a stark reminder of the growing terrorism concerns in Pakistan, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.

According to a Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security report, Pakistan witnessed 380 violence-linked fatalities and 220 injuries in the second quarter of 2024, resulting from 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which share borders with neighboring Afghanistan, have borne the brunt of these attacks, accounting for nearly 92% of all fatalities and 87% of attacks.

The federal government has taken notice of the growing terrorism concerns and has approved the launch of a strategic campaign “Azm-e-Istehkam”, a renewed national anti-terror drive as part of the National Action Plan. This campaign aims to counter cross-border infiltration and terrorism, and to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
