A devastating terrorist attack on a police checkpoint in Khyber district’s Charwazagai area has left two policemen and one civilian martyred, and one policeman and one civilian injured. The attack, which occurred at the Pak-Afghan highway near Landi Kotal Bazar, is a stark reminder of the growing terrorism concerns in Pakistan, particularly in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.
The attack is part of a larger trend of increasing terror activities in the region. According to a Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security report, Pakistan witnessed 380 violence-linked fatalities and 220 injuries in the second quarter of 2024, resulting from 240 incidents of terror attacks and counter-terror operations. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which share borders with neighboring Afghanistan, have borne the brunt of these attacks, accounting for nearly 92% of all fatalities and 87% of attacks.
The federal government has taken notice of the growing terrorism concerns and has approved the launch of a strategic campaign “Azm-e-Istehkam”, a renewed national anti-terror drive as part of the National Action Plan. This campaign aims to counter cross-border infiltration and terrorism, and to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
The attack on the police checkpoint is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement agencies in their fight against terrorism. It is essential for the government and security forces to take concrete measures to prevent such attacks and ensure the safety of citizens.
