A remote-controlled bomb attack on a police van in South Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has left 13 people injured, including six police personnel and seven civilians. The attack occurred on Kir Kot Road in Wana Rustam Bazar, targeting a police van providing security to polio workers.
The injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital Wana, with one critically injured victim shifted to Dera Ismail Khan. The attack coincided with the launch of an anti-polio campaign in the region, which has been plagued by security concerns and attacks on polio workers.
Police sources revealed that two police vehicles were heading to Krikot Road to provide security to polio workers when one of them was targeted. The area has been cordoned off, and an investigation is underway.
The District Health Officer, Dr. Inayat Rahman, confirmed that the polio campaign has begun across the district, with 70,000 children over the age of five being vaccinated. Strict security arrangements have been made, with 480 police personnel deployed for the security of 297 polio teams.
This attack highlights the risks faced by security personnel and polio workers in Pakistan, particularly in the northwestern region. Over the past decade, dozens of polio workers have been attacked, creating an atmosphere of fear among those tasked with protecting the country’s children.
