Former Test cricketer Tanveer Ahmed has come out in support of Babar Azam’s batting abilities, stating that the 29-year-old batter has the potential to regain his form. Ahmed’s comments come after Pakistan’s substandard performance against Bangladesh in the first Test, where Azam’s batting was heavily criticized.
Ahmed acknowledged that Pakistan made big mistakes against Bangladesh, but he believes that Azam’s batting prowess will ultimately shine through. “One good innings will definitely boost Babar Azam’s confidence,” Ahmed said. He also recalled Azam’s performance in the 2023 World Cup, where he was dismissed due to personal mistakes rather than the bowlers’ skills.
Ahmed also discussed the drop of Shaheen Shah Afridi from the team, questioning whether it was due to workload or attitude issues. He emphasized the importance of performance and ignoring external factors. “If Shaheen feels he was dropped from the team due to attitude, then Shaheen merely needs to focus on playing cricket, performance, and ignore other things,” Ahmed said.
Regarding the second Test match, Ahmed believes Pakistan will start under pressure but remains confident in their abilities, stating they are a better side than Bangladesh. “There is no doubt about that Pakistan will start the proceedings in the second Test match with great pressure, because they have lost the first match. But I still believe that Pakistan is a far better side than Bangladesh,” Ahmed said.
Ahmed also addressed the criticism surrounding Azam’s drop in rankings, saying there is no need to discuss it. “When he was playing in the top order, so many people were causing uproar over Babar’s rankings. Now those same people are talking about Babar’s ranking. So why are you talking about the ranking now?” Ahmed said.
In conclusion, Tanveer Ahmed has backed Babar Azam’s batting abilities, believing that one good innings will boost his confidence. Ahmed’s comments come as a much-needed boost for Azam, who has been under intense scrutiny following Pakistan’s poor performance in the first Test.
