Taliban Imposes Further Restrictions on Women’s Education in Afghanistan

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has taken a devastating step backward in women’s education, banning educational programs on local radio and television stations. This decision extends the existing ban on girls’ education above the sixth grade, further limiting opportunities for women and girls.

Since August 2021, the Taliban has denied education to girls, resulting in:

  • 1.4 million Afghan girls denied access to secondary education (UNESCO report)
  • 1.1 million decrease in primary school enrollment for both boys and girls (UNESCO report)
  • 2.5 million girls (80% of female school-age population) currently out of school due to Taliban policies (UNESCO report)

This move not only extinguishes hope for girls’ education but also eliminates a significant source of income for media outlets. The Taliban’s restrictions continue to raise concerns about the future of women’s rights and education in Afghanistan.
