Mumbai: Indian police have raised suspicions that the suspect arrested in connection with the knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan may be a Bangladeshi national.
According to Reuters, authorities reported that the suspect, who was detained in Mumbai, is believed to be a Bangladeshi citizen and is considered the main perpetrator in the attack on the actor.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Dikshit Gedam held a press conference and stated that evidence suggests the suspect entered India illegally and changed his identity. The individual was using the name Vijay Das, but police believe his real name is Mohammad Sharif Islam Shehzad.
Gedam further revealed that the suspect arrived in the city five to six months ago and worked for a housekeeping agency. Investigations are ongoing, and the police will continue questioning the suspect.
Earlier, police in the state of Chhattisgarh arrested another individual believed to be involved in the attack. Sanjeev Sinha, a representative from the Railway Protection Force, stated that Mumbai police had informed them about the suspect boarding a train. Video calls with Mumbai police officials confirmed the suspect’s identity.
Saif Ali Khan was attacked on the night of January 16 when an assailant broke into his residence and stabbed him six times, including two strikes near his spine. The actor was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. His condition is now stable, and he is recovering well.
