The Supreme Court of Pakistan has reprimanded the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for seeking clarification on its July 12 verdict, declaring PTI eligible for reserved seats in parliament. The court termed the ECP’s move as an attempt to “obstruct implementation” of the judgment and create confusion.
The ECP had sought guidance on the matter of remaining lawmakers in the national and provincial assemblies, but the court saw this as a “contrived device” and “dilatory tactics.” The court noted that the ECP had already recognized Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as PTI’s chairman and could not now question his authority.
The court also warned the ECP that its continued refusal to accept the party certificates issued by Khan may expose it to action as warranted by the Constitution and law. The court emphasized that the PTI candidates who won seats are deemed to be members of the PTI parliamentary party for all constitutional and legal purposes.
The Supreme Court’s clarification has put to rest any doubts about PTI’s eligibility for reserved seats, and the ECP is now bound to issue the required list of PTI members.
