A devastating suicide bombing occurred in the southern province of Abyan, Yemen, on Friday morning, resulting in the loss of 12 Yemeni soldiers. The attack took place when a booby-trapped car was driven into a military post in the Mudiyah district, according to Mohamed al-Naqib, a spokesperson for the Southern Transitional Council.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it is suspected to be the work of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which has increased its attacks on military facilities in Yemen. The country’s nine-year conflict between the Iran-aligned Houthi group and a Saudi-backed coalition has provided an opportunity for AQAP to expand its influence.

The Southern Transitional Council, which controls large parts of the south and seeks secession, has intensified its offensives against Al Qaeda elements in Abyan over the past year. Despite efforts by the US military, the coalition, and the Houthis to crack down on AQAP, the group has survived and continues to take advantage of Yemen’s chaos, tribal sympathies, and vast empty territories.

This latest attack highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by Yemen and the need for continued efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
