SpaceX is set to launch a private crew of four astronauts on the Polaris Dawn mission, a historic endeavor that marks the first-ever private spacewalk using new spacesuits and a redesigned spacecraft. The mission, bankrolled by billionaire entrepreneur Jared Isaacman, will take the crew on a five-day journey in an oval-shaped orbit around Earth, passing as close as 190 kilometers and as far as 1,400 kilometers.
The crew, consisting of Isaacman, mission pilot Scott Poteet, and SpaceX employees Sarah Gillis and Anna Menon, will conduct a spacewalk on the third day of the mission at an altitude of 700 kilometers. The spacewalk will last around 20 minutes, during which Isaacman and Gillis will exit the spacecraft tethered by an oxygen line while Poteet and Menon stay in the cabin.
The Polaris Dawn mission is a significant milestone for SpaceX, as it will be the farthest humans have traveled from Earth since the Apollo moon program in 1972. The mission will also conduct a range of scientific experiments to study the effects of cosmic radiation and the vacuum of space on the human body.
