South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has been impeached following a failed attempt to impose martial law in the country.
According to foreign news agencies, a week after a failed attempt to impose martial law, a motion for impeachment was introduced in South Korea’s parliament. The first attempt at impeachment was unsuccessful. However, during the second vote today, 204 members of parliament voted in favor of the impeachment motion, while 85 voted against it.
To successfully impeach the president, 200 votes were required. Opposition parties needed to gain the support of eight government lawmakers, and seven members of the ruling party assured the opposition of their support.
The impeachment follows President Yoon’s controversial attempt to declare martial law, which sparked protests across the country, with thousands of citizens taking to the streets demanding his resignation. President Yoon has vowed to fight the impeachment motion until the very end.
