The Sindh government has embarked on an ambitious project to establish solar-wind hybrid generation plants, producing 350MW of electricity at a tariff of Rs18.45 per unit. This innovative approach is expected to reduce the per-unit cost of electricity as the generation capacity expands.
Mehfooz Qazi, Director of the Alternative Energy Development Board, revealed that the project will generate 766GW of clean energy annually, benefiting industries significantly. Third-party studies and validation will be conducted to solidify the hybrid clean power generation plan.
The transmission and distribution systems of the Sindh Transmission & Dispatch Company (STDC) will be fully utilized to supply clean electricity to industrial consumers under B2B arrangements.
Furthermore, the government aims to provide 500,000 solar panels to off-grid homes in remote areas, energizing 2.6 million homes through renewable power production. Various initiatives are underway to promote renewable energy in the province, including the Sindh Solar Energy Project, which comprises four components:
- Utility-Scale Solar: Developing publicly-owned solar parks and supporting private sector developers.
- Distributed Solar: Procuring and installing solar PV systems on public sector buildings.
- Solar Home Systems: Providing solar home systems to off-grid households.
- Institutional Strengthening: Enhancing institutional capacity for renewable energy development.
