A deep depression in the Arabian Sea has prompted warnings of a potential cyclonic storm along Sindh’s coast, with heavy rains expected in southern districts, including Karachi. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert, predicting the system will intensify into a cyclonic storm and move west-southwestward, bringing torrential rains and strong winds.
Schools in Karachi and Hyderabad have been closed, and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The PMD has warned of urban flooding and flash floods in rural areas, and citizens have been urged to stay indoors.
The formation of a cyclone in the monsoon season is a rare phenomenon, with the last such storm occurring in 1976. If the storm materializes, it will be named ‘Asna’.
