Lahore – Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar has called on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and opener Fakhar Zaman to mend their strained relationship, emphasizing the importance of unity for the success of Pakistan cricket.
In a recent appearance on a state news channel, Akhtar expressed his disappointment over Fakhar’s continued benching, describing it as a consequence of “ego battles” within the team’s management.
“Fakhar Zaman is a mature and dedicated player who has been sidelined unfairly. Ego clashes are costing the team a valuable asset. Whether you play him today or tomorrow, you will need him sooner or later,” Akhtar remarked.
He also advised Fakhar to focus on his game and avoid public comments about his exclusion. “Fakhar must let his bat do the talking. Rather than making statements, he should focus on proving himself when given the chance,” he added.
Fakhar Zaman Denies Fitness Concerns
Fakhar, who has been excluded from Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing white-ball series against South Africa, has disputed claims about his fitness and lack of form, which were cited by interim head coach Aqib Javed as reasons for his omission.
The 34-year-old opener, currently playing in the Champions T20 Cup, reiterated his readiness to represent Pakistan. “I’m fit, and that’s why I’m playing in domestic cricket. If given the opportunity, I’ll do my best to help Pakistan win, just as I did during the Champions Trophy,” Fakhar said.
Mohammad Rizwan Defends PCB’s Decision
Addressing the controversy, Pakistan’s white-ball captain, Mohammad Rizwan, dismissed suggestions of bias against Fakhar. In a PCB-released video, Rizwan highlighted the team’s respect for the left-handed batter, describing him as a “game-changer” and a crucial asset for Pakistan cricket.
“There’s no personal issue with Fakhar Zaman. Everyone knows his value as a player. We’re all hopeful about his future because he brings something unique to the team,” Rizwan said.
He added that Fakhar’s exclusion was based on performance and team strategy, not just fitness concerns.
Growing Concern Over Internal Rift
Shoaib Akhtar’s remarks underline increasing unease about internal conflicts affecting Pakistan cricket’s performance. Known for his candid opinions, Akhtar urged the PCB to prioritize resolving differences to maintain a cohesive team environment.
As discussions around Fakhar Zaman’s absence continue, fans and experts alike are calling for clarity and resolution to ensure Pakistan’s cricket team remains competitive on the global stage.
