Islamabad( The COW News Digital)Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed optimism about strengthening Pakistan’s relationship with Bangladesh, saying that bilateral ties are improving steadily. Speaking to journalists in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session, the premier shared details of his meeting with Bangladesh’s interim leader, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
“Sheikh Dr. Yunus and I had a very productive meeting. He expressed a firm commitment to strengthening mutual relations between the two countries,” Shehbaz Sharif told reporters. The prime minister said that relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have shown a positive trajectory in recent months, and the focus is now on expanding cooperation in trade and diplomacy.
“We are taking our brotherly ties forward,” he said, adding that both nations are ready to explore new opportunities in trade, business, and people-to-people connections. “We are committed to improving diplomatic relations and working on new areas of cooperation that benefit both nations,” he added.
Answering a question about ongoing talks, Shehbaz said that Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar would be attending an important meeting later today to finalize steps for implementing a joint declaration aimed at institutionalizing cooperation between the two countries. “We will soon see practical measures based on this understanding,” he assured.
Shehbaz also addressed questions on global issues, including Palestine and Kashmir. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s longstanding position on supporting oppressed people worldwide. “I will raise all critical issues, including Palestine and Kashmir, at the UN General Assembly session,” he stated. “Pakistan’s voice has always been clear — we stand for justice, human rights, and international law.”
Political observers view this outreach as part of Pakistan’s broader diplomatic strategy to mend strained relationships with key regional players. Ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh have experienced periods of tension over historical grievances, but recent gestures from both sides signal a willingness to move forward.
The prime minister’s remarks suggest that Islamabad is focusing on improving regional stability through dialogue and collaboration, which could have positive implications for South Asia’s economic and political landscape.
With both governments committed to dialogue, experts believe that an improved relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh could pave the way for increased trade, cultural exchanges, and cooperative efforts in multilateral forums like SAARC.
