Cape Town: Pakistani captain Shan Masood broke a 27-year-old record during the second and final Test of the series against South Africa, despite his team’s defeat.
On Monday, South Africa defeated Pakistan by 10 wickets in the Cape Town Test, completing a clean sweep of the two-match series.
In the match, South Africa scored 615 runs in their first innings, while Pakistan was dismissed for 194 runs. Following on, Pakistan managed to score 478 runs in their second innings, taking a 57-run lead. Shan Masood played a brilliant knock, scoring 145 runs, while Babar Azam contributed 81 and Agha Salman made 48 runs.
Although Pakistan managed to avoid an innings defeat, they could not save the match. South Africa successfully chased down the target of 58 runs without losing a wicket.
Shan Masood’s 145-run innings broke the 27-year-old record for the highest individual score by a Pakistani batter in a Test match on South African soil. The previous record was held by former Pakistani all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who scored 136 runs against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1998.
In addition, Shan Masood became the first Pakistani captain to score a Test century in South Africa. Before him, Salim Malik held the record for the highest score by a Pakistani captain in South Africa, with 99 runs in January 1995.
