A local court in Karachi has approved a search warrant for the Sarim Burney Trust, allowing investigators to gather evidence and records related to the alleged trafficking. Burney appeared in court via video link, denying any wrongdoing.
According to the FIA, Burney trafficked 20 newborn babies to the United States under the guise of adoption, including a baby girl named Haya. The agency claims that Haya’s parents were paid Rs1 million for their daughter, and that Burney’s wife was also a beneficiary of the alleged scheme. The FIA has registered a first information report (FIR) against Burney, and additional charges of human trafficking and money laundering are expected to be filed.
Burney was taken into custody on June 5 upon his return to Karachi from a trip to the US. The investigation has sparked widespread concern and outrage, with many calling for a thorough probe into the allegations. The court has adjourned the hearing until July 25, allowing the FIA to continue its investigation and gather further evidence. If convicted, Burney could face severe legal consequences for his alleged role in the trafficking of innocent children.
