Kurram: Elders from a peace committee in Kurram district have written to the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, highlighting the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region due to severe shortages of food and medicines. The letter urges authorities to arrange permanent supply convoys to address the critical situation.
The elders noted that despite agreements signed during a successful jirga in Kohat, implementation remains incomplete. Essential items such as food, fuel, and medicines are in dire scarcity in Kurram, leading to a rise in fatalities. They stressed the urgent need to restore supply chains on a long-term basis.
Large numbers of people are reportedly stranded in Kurram, unable to travel to other areas for essential needs. In Bagan Bazaar, residents are staging protests in freezing weather, demanding immediate rehabilitation of their homes and markets, which were destroyed during recent unrest.
Meanwhile, trader leader Nazir Ahmed alleged that looted goods from Bagan are being sold openly in local markets, calling for strict action against those responsible.
In response to the crisis, the provincial health department has dispatched an emergency supply of medicines to Upper Kurram. According to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Health Secretary, these medicines have been sent via a government helicopter and handed over to the Medical Superintendent of Parachinar to address the emergency.
The situation in Kurram remains critical as residents and local leaders appeal for swift action to restore peace and provide relief to the affected population.
