Saudia (The COW News Digital)A rare astronomical phenomenon occurred today as the sun positioned itself exactly above the Kaaba in the holy city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia, casting a unique moment that holds both scientific and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.
According to Arab media and the Jeddah Astronomical Society, at solar noon, the sun’s rays fell vertically onto the Kaaba, causing all shadows around it to disappear completely. This event is a clear indication that the sun was shining at a 90-degree angle directly overhead, an occurrence that aids in the precise determination of the Qibla — the direction Muslims face during prayer.
The phenomenon, known as the “Solar Zenith,” happens twice annually — once at the end of May and again in mid-July. It occurs as the sun moves southward from the Tropic of Cancer, crossing the latitude of Makkah at approximately 21.4 degrees north. This alignment results in the sun standing directly above a specific point on Earth.
Majid Abu Zahra, President of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, explained that this event took place during Dhuhr (noon) prayers and embodies not only a scientific marvel but also a moment of spiritual harmony. He described the direct sunlight on the Kaaba as a symbolic connection between the heavens and Earth, reinforcing the deep spiritual reverence Muslims hold for the site.
Historically, this rare alignment has helped worshippers and scholars confirm the accurate Qibla direction without relying on modern technology. The disappearance of shadows at this moment allows anyone who observes the sun at this position to determine the exact orientation of the Kaaba.
This solar event serves as a reminder of the remarkable precision of natural celestial mechanics and the deep ties between faith and science in Islamic tradition. As millions of Muslims around the world look toward the Kaaba five times a day for prayer, such rare moments highlight the enduring importance of celestial guidance in religious practices.
The Solar Zenith at the Kaaba is more than just an astronomical event; it is a powerful symbol of divine alignment and spiritual unity that resonates deeply within the global Muslim community.
