According to Arab media and the Jeddah Astronomical Society, at solar noon, the sun’s rays fell vertically onto the Kaaba, causing all shadows around it to disappear completely. This event is a clear indication that the sun was shining at a 90-degree angle directly overhead, an occurrence that aids in the precise determination of the Qibla — the direction Muslims face during prayer.
The phenomenon, known as the “Solar Zenith,” happens twice annually — once at the end of May and again in mid-July. It occurs as the sun moves southward from the Tropic of Cancer, crossing the latitude of Makkah at approximately 21.4 degrees north. This alignment results in the sun standing directly above a specific point on Earth.
Majid Abu Zahra, President of the Jeddah Astronomical Society, explained that this event took place during Dhuhr (noon) prayers and embodies not only a scientific marvel but also a moment of spiritual harmony.
