Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in 24 deaths and 17 injuries since July 29. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that excessive rainfall led to saturated flood basins, overflowing rivers, and overwhelmed natural drainage systems, causing widespread flooding.
The most casualties were reported in Kohat, where 10 people lost their lives, including six children. The district administration, Rescue 1122, and local volunteers recovered the dead bodies and distributed non-food items to affected families.
Upper Chitral was the most affected area in terms of infrastructure damage, with 107 houses either fully or partially destroyed by flash floods. Across the province, 150 houses were damaged, with 77 partially damaged and 73 destroyed.
Flash floods and house collapses were also reported in Hangu, Haripur, Mansehra, Lower Dir, Charsadda, Mohmand, Bajaur, and Abbottabad. Landslides were reported in Abbottabad, and tourists have been advised against traveling to the area.
The PDMA has issued a weather warning, predicting another series of monsoon showers to start in the province and continue intermittently until August 6. The warning alerts of urban flooding in low-lying areas and flash flooding in local streams, with a risk of landslides in upper districts.
