KARACHI ( The COW News Digital) The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rainfall across several cities of Sindh next week, including moderate showers in Karachi, as a fresh monsoon system approaches the region.
According to the PMD, the weather system is expected to enter Sindh via the Indian state of Gujarat on the night of August 17. Under its influence, rain is likely in multiple parts of Sindh between August 18 and 23, with some areas experiencing heavy downpours.
Meteorological officials said Karachi could receive one to two “good spells” of rainfall during this period, with moderate-intensity showers expected in the provincial capital. “The monsoon system could bring much-needed relief from the prevailing heat, but localized heavy showers may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas,” the PMD warned.
The department also advised city administrations across Sindh to take precautionary measures to minimize the impact of potential urban flooding and traffic disruptions, especially in Karachi, Hyderabad, and other densely populated cities.
Earlier this month, meteorologists had indicated that the monsoon season this year might last longer than usual, with the period from August 14 to 23 deemed particularly significant for rainfall activity. This latest system is expected to be part of that extended wet spell.
Farmers and agricultural planners have been urged to adjust their schedules in anticipation of the rains, as the monsoon could benefit crops but also risk damage in areas prone to flooding.
Karachi residents have expressed mixed reactions to the forecast. While many welcome the cooler weather and respite from prolonged heat, there are concerns about poor drainage infrastructure leading to prolonged water accumulation on roads.
The PMD noted that the intensity and exact distribution of rainfall will depend on the system’s trajectory and local weather patterns. Authorities will issue updated alerts closer to the expected onset.
Emergency services in Karachi have also been placed on standby, with municipal authorities promising rapid response teams to address rain-related issues, including drainage clearance and removal of fallen trees.
This year’s monsoon season has already brought significant rainfall to various parts of Pakistan, with several cities experiencing flash floods and waterlogging. The PMD continues to monitor developments closely to provide timely warnings to the public.
