New Delhi ( The COW News Digital)In a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has called on him to resign, citing economic mismanagement and diplomatic failures that have culminated in the United States imposing 50% tariffs on Indian goods.
Rahul Gandhi, a senior Congress leader and prominent Modi critic, described the new tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump as “an international embarrassment” for India. He accused the Modi government of being diplomatically weak and economically inept, failing to protect India’s interests on the global stage.
In a strongly worded post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gandhi wrote:
“Trump’s 50% tariff is nothing less than economic blackmail. Mr. Modi, the time has come to stop ignoring public interest. Step down and give India a chance to recover under real leadership.”
The remarks come after President Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports this week, taking the total tariffs to 50%. The White House justified the move by citing India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, accusing New Delhi of indirectly supporting Russia’s war machine in Ukraine.
Gandhi also slammed Modi for failing to respond publicly to Trump’s actions and instead opting for silence at a critical time. “Rather than confronting the U.S. or defending India’s stance, Modi has gone quiet while the country bears the brunt of these trade penalties,” Gandhi alleged.
Opposition leaders across party lines echoed Rahul Gandhi’s sentiments. Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party officials also criticized the government for its inadequate foreign policy and “damaging economic decisions.”
Several opposition MPs also linked the economic crisis to Modi’s handling of India’s defense deals, particularly the Rafale fighter jet procurement, and his response to recent tensions with Pakistan, urging transparency over reported military losses.
Meanwhile, the Modi government has yet to issue a formal statement in response to Rahul Gandhi’s comments or the additional tariffs from Washington.
Political analysts believe the tariff crisis could become a major issue in the upcoming general elections, especially as economic pressures mount on Indian exporters and consumers.
With growing political unrest and international pressure, the Modi administration is now under immense scrutiny—both at home and abroad
