Lahore – Senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Qamar Zaman Kaira, underscored the importance of fostering understanding and tolerance in the country.
Speaking at an event at Punjab University Lahore, Kaira emphasized that Pakistan’s youth have the potential to elevate the nation among the world’s developed countries. “The Muslim Ummah has been subjugated for centuries; it’s time for us to wake up,” he remarked.
Highlighting the importance of accountability and self-reflection, Kaira urged individuals to prepare for “the accountability of the Hereafter” and to dismantle walls of hatred that divide society. He cautioned against blindly following misleading narratives and noted Pakistan’s turbulent political history marked by multiple martial laws.
The PPP leader criticized efforts to impose a one-party system in the country, reiterating that “Pakistan was founded as a democratic nation, and the state must operate in accordance with democratic principles.”
Referring to past political claims, Kaira remarked, “We have seen those who promised to create a ‘State of Madinah.’ What we need now is to understand each other’s perspectives rather than impose our beliefs on others.”
He stressed that tolerance, not intolerance, is the foundation of a functioning society. “Nations progress when they embrace diversity and practice mutual respect,” Kaira concluded.
