Rawalpindi: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif criticized the delays in justice for those involved in the May 9 incidents, stating that justice should have been swift, as seen in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Taking to social media platform X, the minister revealed that 25 individuals had been sentenced for their roles in the tragic events. He remarked that the delays in delivering justice had emboldened the culprits and their facilitators.
Asif condemned the lack of denunciation of the “dark day,” noting that those who disrespected martyrs and veterans were portrayed as heroes. He further stressed that until the masterminds behind the May 9 violence are held accountable, such incidents will not cease. “These elements only bolster the morale of enemies of the nation,” he added.
The sentences were issued by military courts, as per the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The ISPR described May 9, 2023, as a black chapter in Pakistan’s history, when politically incited riots and arson shocked the nation. The events were rooted in a hate-filled political narrative, leading to coordinated attacks on military installations, including memorials of martyrs.
The ISPR emphasized that no one can be allowed to impose their will through political terrorism. Following thorough investigations, undeniable evidence was collected against those involved, leading to several cases being referred to Field General Court Martial for trial.
On December 13, 2024, Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered the resolution of pending cases related to May 9, which had been delayed due to prior court rulings. The seven-member constitutional bench directed that the trials proceed and decisions be finalized.
