The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) plans to hold a public gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan on August 14 have been dealt a blow as the Lahore Deputy Commissioner has rejected their plea. The decision comes ahead of the country’s Independence Day celebrations, which are held on August 14.
According to the Lahore DC’s lawyer, the plea was rejected due to the law and order situation and because August 14 is a day when citizens celebrate Independence Day and visit Minar-e-Pakistan. The lawyer argued that allowing the PTI to hold a rally on the same day could disrupt the celebrations and pose a security risk.
Earlier, the Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon had also denied PTI’s request to hold a jalsa in the capital, citing multiple reasons. The party had approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking permission to hold the rally, but their plea was rejected.
The LHC’s Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabbir heard Akmal Khan’s application, but ultimately upheld the DC’s decision. The PTI has not yet commented on the development, but it is likely to be a significant setback for the party’s plans to hold a large public gathering on Independence Day.
The PTI has been holding public rallies and gatherings across the country as part of its campaign against the government. However, the party has faced resistance from the authorities, who have cited security concerns and other reasons to deny permission for the rallies.
