Raoof Hasan, a senior spokesperson for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was released from Adiala Jail on Tuesday night after an anti-terrorism court granted him bail in a case related to the alleged recovery of explosives. The development comes as a relief to the PTI leadership and supporters, who had been demanding Hasan’s release.
Hasan was arrested on July 22 in a case registered by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (Peca). His arrest was seen as part of a broader crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters by the government. The interior ministry had claimed that the PTI was involved in “anti-state propaganda” and had formed a joint investigation committee (JIT) to probe those creating “chaos and disorder” in the country through “malicious social media campaigns”.
However, the anti-terrorism court found no evidence linking Hasan to the charges and noted that he is 75 years old, has severe illnesses, and has no previous criminal record. The court granted him bail against furnishing surety bonds of Rs200,000.
Hasan’s release was announced by PTI lawyer Naeem Haider Panjutha on social media, and footage of his release was also shared online. The development has been welcomed by PTI supporters, who had been demanding justice for Hasan.
The case against Hasan was seen as part of a broader effort by the government to silence PTI leaders and supporters. However, the court’s decision to grant bail to Hasan has been seen as a setback for the government’s efforts to crackdown on political opponents.
