Islamabad: Federal Minister for Communications, Aliem Khan, presented details in the National Assembly regarding the financial losses incurred due to the closure of motorways during the PTI protests in November 2024.
In a written response submitted to the assembly, Aliem Khan explained that motorways M2, M3, and M4 were closed from November 24 to 26 as a precautionary measure due to the protests. The closures resulted in a toll revenue loss of 151.5 million rupees.
Khan stated that the decision to close the motorways was made due to concerns about law and order, with reliable intelligence reports indicating that protesters were planning to disrupt peace and damage property.
In addition to the motorway closures, Khan mentioned that five motorways, including the Peshawar-Islamabad and Lahore-Islamabad routes, were shut for repairs. He also revealed that intelligence reports indicated protesters were armed with sticks and slingshots, prompting authorities to close the roads to protect public safety. Notices were issued to inform the public about the closures.
The Minister also highlighted that last week, toll revenue collected from the three motorways amounted to 353.6 million rupees, illustrating the financial impact of the closures during the protests.
