PESHAWAR: ( The COW News Digital)-The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is expected to face a significant setback in the upcoming Senate elections from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with projections suggesting the party could lose three crucial seats.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), polling for 11 Senate seats — including 7 general, 2 women, and 2 technocrat/ulema seats — will take place on July 21, 2025, at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building.
The elections were originally scheduled for April 2, 2024, but were postponed due to the failure of lawmakers elected on reserved seats to take oath, rendering the electoral college incomplete.
Despite having a numerical advantage with 92 MPAs in the 145-member house, PTI now faces an unexpected challenge. With the opposition holding 53 MPAs, the allocation of reserved seats has tilted the balance, enabling the opposition to secure more than the previously expected single seat.
As a result, PTI, which was earlier in a position to sweep the elections, is now projected to win only 7 seats, losing 3 it once considered secure.
In a parallel development, the ECP has also announced the schedule for the vacant Senate seat left by Sania Nishtar, with polling to be held on July 31
Additionally, the election for the seat vacated by the late Senator Sajid Mir is also on the cards in Punjab, following a similar delay due to the earlier incomplete electoral college.
