The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that it will begin suspending mobile SIMs of users who have not renewed their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC). This move is part of the authority’s second phase operation to stop the illegal use of SIMs across Pakistan.
Users whose ID cards have expired before 2017 and have not been renewed will have their SIMs suspended. The PTA has urged users to get their identity cards renewed to avoid getting their SIMs blocked.
In the first phase, the PTA blocked fake SIMs and cancelled CNICs of citizens. Since August 16, more than 69,000 illegal SIMs have been blocked based on data obtained from the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
The PTA will also terminate SIMs registered in the names of deceased persons in the third phase. Awareness messages were sent to users before the blocking of mobile SIMs, asking them to update relevant data.
The authority has taken action against illegal content, blocking over 363,000 URLs in the last three and a half years. Social media platforms have blocked 307,610 URLs in the category of defamatory or impersonating content.
