In his address to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, PM Shehbaz emphasized that the only way to achieve permanent peace and stability in the region is to give the people of Kashmir their due rights.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come on the occasion of Youm-i-Istehsal, observed on August 5, to mark India’s unilateral action of revoking Indian-held Kashmir’s special status in 2019. PM Shehbaz criticized India’s actions, saying they were a means to “consolidate its occupation” of the disputed valley. He also highlighted the human rights abuses and atrocities committed by Indian forces in Kashmir, including the harassment of innocent people, arbitrary detentions, and “cordon and search operations”.
PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people in their struggle for freedom and self-determination. He vowed to continue knocking on the doors of international institutions to seek a resolution to the dispute. The Prime Minister also drew parallels with the situation in Gaza, where Israeli forces have been committing atrocities against Palestinians.
The Prime Minister’s call for peace and dialogue is a welcome step, but it remains to be seen how India responds. The Kashmir dispute has been a major point of contention between India and Pakistan for decades, and a resolution seems elusive. However, with the international community increasingly focusing on human rights and self-determination, there is hope that a peaceful solution can be found.
