Islamabad( The COW News Digital)The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has dismissed widespread social media reports predicting an “extremely cold winter” across the country this year.
In an official clarification, the PMD stated that such claims are scientifically baseless and misleading, emphasizing that no verified data supports the idea of record-breaking cold weather in Pakistan during the upcoming winter season.
According to the department, the official winter forecast for December 2025 to February 2026 is based on international climate models and data verified by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). These models suggest that temperatures are likely to remain slightly above normal across most regions, while rainfall is expected to be near or below average.
The statement added that while temporary cold waves may occur in some areas due to western disturbances, there is no scientific evidence indicating an unusually harsh or prolonged winter nationwide.
“Certain western systems could cause one or more short-lived cold spells,” the department clarified, “but there is no sign of an extreme or record-breaking winter.”
Meteorological analysts further explained that a weak to moderate La Niña pattern currently persists in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Historically, the presence of La Niña tends to reduce the intensity and frequency of winter systems across South and Southwest Asia, including Pakistan.
This means fewer and weaker western disturbances, less snowfall and rainfall in the northern and western mountainous regions, and milder temperatures in the plains compared to average years.
Experts have urged the public to rely only on official weather updates from PMD and not to spread unverified claims on social media, which often lead to unnecessary panic.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate, timely forecasts to help citizens and government agencies prepare for any genuine weather-related challenges.
