Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the international community to acknowledge Pakistan’s significant contribution to hosting Afghan refugees and share the burden collectively. During a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, the PM highlighted the socio-economic challenges and security threats faced by Pakistan while hosting a large refugee population.
The PM reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to addressing the protection and safety needs of vulnerable populations and appreciated the UNHCR’s support over the years. He sought the agency’s assistance in mobilizing resources to supplement Pakistan’s efforts and promote durable solutions, including safe return and reintegration in Afghanistan and third-country relocation.
Grandi praised Pakistan’s hospitality and generosity in hosting millions of Afghan refugees for decades and assured continued support to fulfill their basic needs. The UN High Commissioner’s visit to Pakistan from July 7-9 aims to strengthen collaboration and address the refugee crisis.
