PHC Seeks Response from ECP on Senate Elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Peshawar, (News Desk)The Peshawar High Court has directed the Election Commission to submit a response regarding the delay in conducting Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The court, headed by Chief Justice Ihtiaq Ibrahim and Justice Waqar Ahmed, was hearing a case filed by PTI leader Azam Swati over the non-conduct of Senate elections in the province.

The petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that a request had been made for the holding of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Election Commission’s lawyer explained that a meeting regarding the Senate elections was held on December 10, and consultations are still ongoing. The review petition concerning the reserved seats is pending in the Supreme Court, and it is being considered as well.

Chief Justice Ihtiaq Ibrahim remarked that the Election Commission should be given two weeks to respond. The Election Commission’s lawyer requested more time, citing the complexity of the matter. The court inquired about a specific date for the response, but the lawyer could not provide a definite timeline.

The court stated that it could not grant indefinite extension and ordered the Election Commission to submit its response by January 16, 2025. The hearing was adjourned until then.
