The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s conflict-ridden Kurram district has confirmed the formation of peace committees comprising local residents and tribal and political leaders after a successful peace agreement between rival factions.

DC Javedullah Mehsud stated that the committees include representatives from all sects and schools of thought. He announced that the first convoy carrying essential supplies will depart for Parachinar on January 4, 2025, under police protection, with additional law enforcement agencies on standby for emergencies.

The peace committees were established following an agreement reached during a jirga on January 1. Local leaders have pledged to set aside personal and tribal disputes to ensure the safety of civilians and the secure transport of goods, easing the hardships caused by prolonged road blockades lasting over 80 days.

DC Mehsud clarified that Kurram’s issues stem from local tribal and land disputes, not terrorism, though they are often portrayed as sectarian. Under the agreement, residents have committed to surrendering weapons within 15 days and dismantling local bunkers within a month.

The committees include notable figures from Lower Kurram, such as former MNA Pir Haider Ali Shah, Abid Faizullah, and Hussain Ali Shah Hussaini, and from Upper Kurram, including former Senator Sajjad Hussain Turi, MPA Ali Hadi, and Muzammil Shah, among others.

Meanwhile, Barrister Saif, Advisor on Information for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, announced that preparations are underway for the safe passage of Saturday’s convoy. He emphasized that the region will be cleared of weapons and bunkers in line with the Apex Committee’s decisions.

In a Facebook post, Barrister Saif reiterated that both factions are required to submit a comprehensive plan for disarmament within 15 days. He added that the public display and use of weapons would be strictly prohibited, and fundraising for weapon purchases would not be allowed under the agreement.

This landmark initiative is expected to restore peace and improve living conditions in the troubled region.
