Pakistani IT Minister Addresses Social Media Censorship Concerns

Minister of State for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja has denied claims that the government is using firewalls to censor social media content. Speaking to journalists, Khawaja emphasized that all social media platforms, including X, must comply with Pakistani laws. She noted that X has not been complying with local regulations, unlike other platforms like TikTok and Facebook.

Khawaja stated that if the government intended to impose censorship, it would have blocked more popular platforms like TikTok and Facebook instead of X. She reiterated that the government is not in the business of censorship and that compliance with local laws is essential for all social media platforms operating in the country.

The IT ministry also announced plans to introduce an artificial intelligence policy, with a draft focusing on social preparedness, a national AI fund, and aligning technology with AI.
