Pakistani national Asif Bashir, who heroically saved numerous pilgrims during the intense heat at Mina last year, has been honored with the prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz by President Asif Ali Zardari for his exceptional public service.
During Hajj 2024, Asif Bashir, serving as a Hajj assistant under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, carried more than 20 unconscious pilgrims on his shoulders to the hospital, saving many lives amidst the extreme heat. Most of those he rescued were from India and the UK.
Reports indicate that on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, over 1,500 pilgrims tragically lost their lives due to heat exhaustion as they returned from Mina. Amidst the chaos, Asif Bashir worked tirelessly to rescue those who had collapsed, ensuring 26 pilgrims received urgent medical attention. While 17 survived, 9 sadly passed away.
The Indian government has also announced a national award for Asif Bashir in recognition of his humanitarian efforts.
Hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and an employee of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Peshawar, Asif expressed his gratitude for the recognition. Speaking to media in Islamabad before his departure to India, he shared, “The pilgrims were unconscious, and ambulances couldn’t reach them. I carried them on my shoulders to the nearest hospital. Saving lives goes beyond borders—it’s about humanity.”
Despite the sweltering conditions, Asif persevered, recalling how he himself became overwhelmed by the heat but continued his mission. He thanked the President, Prime Minister, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs for acknowledging his efforts.
Asif Bashir’s selfless actions serve as a testament to the spirit of compassion and humanity, transcending national and cultural boundaries.
