Pakistan’s Foreign Office has issued a stern warning to India, stating that the country and its armed forces are fully prepared to defend its sovereignty, borders, and citizens against any form of aggression.
During the weekly media briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch categorically rejected India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a grave provocation. “Water is a matter of life and death for Pakistan. Any attempt by India to block or divert river waters will be treated as an act of war,” she said.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to the Indus Waters Treaty, the spokesperson emphasized that the agreement is vital for the livelihood of over 250 million people in the region.
In light of what Pakistan described as India’s “irresponsible behavior,” the spokesperson stated that Islamabad reserves the right to suspend all bilateral agreements, including the Shimla Accord.
Baloch further informed the media that a high-level National Security Council meeting was held recently, during which India’s veiled threats and violations of international law were strongly condemned. The forum urged the international community to take immediate notice of India’s extrajudicial actions, cross-border violations, and support for terrorism abroad.
Key Measures Announced by Pakistan:
- Closure of Wagah Border: The crossing will remain closed, except for those returning to India before April 30, 2025.
- Visa Cancellations: All visas issued to Indian nationals under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme have been revoked, with the exception of Sikh pilgrims.
- Diplomatic Expulsions: Indian naval, air, and defense advisors in Pakistan have been declared persona non grata and ordered to leave by April 30.
- Reduction in Indian Diplomatic Staff: The number of personnel at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad is being reduced to 30.
- Airspace and Trade Suspension: Pakistan has shut down its airspace to Indian airlines and suspended all bilateral trade ties with India.
The spokesperson also briefed on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent visit to Türkiye, where he held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Additionally, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed and Rwandan Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta visited Pakistan, engaging in discussions on regional cooperation and signing several MoUs on cultural exchange.
Lastly, Pakistan expressed heartfelt condolences on the passing of Pope Francis, lauding his legacy and contributions to peace and humanity.
