New York( The COW News Digital) Pakistan is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) in July, marking a significant diplomatic milestone that underlines its growing role in international peace and security efforts. The announcement came after a high-level meeting between Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN Headquarters.

During the meeting, both sides held an in-depth discussion on Pakistan’s proposed “Programme of Work” for its presidency. The agenda will include crucial global security challenges, including protracted conflicts, peacekeeping effectiveness, and emerging threats to international peace.

Ambassador Akram emphasized that Pakistan’s presidency will focus on inclusive, transparent, and consultative diplomacy. “Pakistan will work to ensure that the UNSC operates with greater effectiveness, fairness, and responsiveness in addressing global crises,” he stated.

He also reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter, and peaceful resolution of conflicts. He highlighted the importance of collective action in the face of rising global instability, particularly in the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Asia.

The discussion also touched upon the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping missions, the growing humanitarian crises in war-torn regions, and the importance of empowering conflict-resolution frameworks.

Pakistan’s presidency is expected to spotlight issues critical to the Global South, including equitable resource allocation, climate-security nexus, and the role of diplomacy in defusing tensions. It is also anticipated to provide Pakistan a strategic platform to project the South Asian region’s concerns, particularly on long-standing disputes and security threats.

Ambassador Akram assured full support to the Secretary-General’s vision for global stability and reaffirmed Pakistan’s resolve to strengthen the role of the UN in fostering durable peace.

This is not the first time Pakistan is assuming the UNSC presidency, but the current term comes at a time of intense geopolitical polarization and escalating global conflicts, adding weight to Islamabad’s upcoming leadership responsibilities.

Pakistan’s term as president of the UNSC in July 2025 will mark an important chapter in its international diplomacy and further cement its image as a responsible and proactive member of the global community.
