Islamabad: In response to the statement made by the Secretary-General of the Norwegian Refugee Council, Jan Egeland, regarding the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the world should have left the Afghan people unsupported after the war.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that Pakistan has hosted over 4 million Afghan refugees for the past 40 years, providing them with shelter and support. However, it pointed out that many of the repatriated individuals did not have legal documents for residence.
Further, the statement highlighted that the resettlement process in Western countries for thousands of Afghan refugees, based on promises made, has progressed at a sluggish pace.
The Foreign Office also expressed concern about the severe reduction in funding for humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, which has reached a dangerously low level. Despite these challenges, Pakistan reiterated its continued support for efforts aimed at achieving long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan.
